Live Edge Design is a style of furniture where the furniture designer or craftsperson incorporates the natural edge of the wood into the design of the piece. Live edge furniture often incorporates types of wood that would not be used in conventional woodworking. There are special challenges involved in working with this type of wood, and several methods for live edge have developed.
Live Edge wood is milled differently as it is carefully handled to maintain its natural rustic line. This is a delicate process that takes the patience of skilled and creative professional work workers and artisans.
There are several wood species that are common with live edge design but typically you will see Oak or Walnut used with furniture. Maple and Cherry are also pretty common. You will also see options like Rustic, which means there are variations such as dramatic color differences and imperfections such as knots, natural holes and cracks. Knots are usually filled with epoxy to ensure the surface remains smooth. And "bark on" live edge which, just as it sounds, tree bark remains on the edge giving the piece a truly rustic and unique look. In most "bark on" furniture the bark is varnished over to give it protection.
